Amazing Facts About Our Furry Friends

Dogs truly are our best friends. They are complete goofballs that bring happiness and joy with their antics to their owners each and every day. However, they are even more amazing than you would expect. As one of the best dog boarding kennels in Petaluma, we’ve had the chance to work with a wide variety of dogs.

Here are some amazing facts about pooches that will make you love them even more.

Their Sense of Smell is 40 Times Stronger Than Ours

The area of cells in the brain that is responsible for detecting different smells is 40 times larger in dogs than humans. It’s no wonder that dogs pick up more smells than humans. That explains why dogs love sniffing out people and can also be trained to sniff out drugs, explosives and weapons. Some dogs can even be trained to sniff out even medical issues.

Some Dogs Are So Fast, They Can Outrun a Cheetah

Dogs can easily outrun a human, but do you know that some dogs can even beat a cheetah in a race? The fastest dog breed in the world, the Greyhound, can reach a top speed of 45mph. Though the top speed of a cheetah is between 69-75mph, it can run at its top speed for around 25-30 seconds, whereas a Greyhound can maintain its top speed for seven miles.

Dogs Sweat Differently Than Humans

Ever wondered why you never see your furry friend sweating? That’s because dogs sweat differently than us. Dogs have two types of sweat glands – merocrine glands and apocrine glands. Merocrine glands function like our sweat glands. They are located in your dog’s paw pads. Your pooch sweats through them.

While apocrine glands are often considered as sweat glands, they do not release sweat and have no role to play in helping your pooch regulate its body temperature. Apocrine glands release pheromones that help your dog identify other dogs’ scents.

Dogs Hear Twice as Many Frequencies As Humans

You probably know that dogs can hear much higher frequencies than humans, but did you know they can also hear further than us? A dog can hear much softer sounds than a human and is capable of hearing sounds from very far away. Another reason why dogs are used in search and rescue missions.
