Are You a New Puppy Parent? Here’s What You Need to Know

Congratulations on the addition of your new four-legged member to your pack! If you have never had a puppy before, it’s natural to feel a little nervous and overwhelmed. You may have several questions. Relax! We’re here to help.

Bridewell Hilltop Kennels is a leading dog boarding facility in San Rafael. Our dedicated team provides care for puppies, and dogs of all ages. We know just how cute, and chaotic the life of a puppy can be. That is why, we have compiled a list of things they should know. Take a look.

Puppy Teething is Inevitable

Like human babies, teething puppies put everything in their mouth and try chewing them. When your pup starts teething at around the age of three months, give them chew toys or they may destroy your items. Scatter these toys around the house and train them to not chew on your stuff.

Make sure the toys are age-appropriate and your pup cannot chew chunks off or pull pieces of fiber from them. When choosing a toy, consider your pup’s size and level of activity.

Whatever the toy, always supervise playtime and chewing. Make sure your furry friend does not chew on its toys too hard or they may hurt their teeth.

There Are Several Benefits of Crate Training

Dogs get anxious when left home alone. To relieve stress and anxiety, many dogs chew on items such as books, clothes and just about anything else available. One way to prevent destructive behaviors in dogs is to crate train them.

A crate provides the dog a safe place to rest. Enforcing crate time can help with separation anxiety and potty training. Once you are sure your dog won’t destroy your stuff when home alone, limit crate time.

Never use the crate for punishment or your pooch may start to hate it, instead of viewing it as its den. Do not crate puppies that are six months old or younger for more than 3-4 hours.

Training Should Start as Soon As You Bring a Pup Home

Start training your pup when it is 7-8 weeks of age. At this young age, a pup can learn basic commands such as come, sit, and stay. Like human children, puppies have short attention spans. For this reason, formal puppy training is usually delayed until they reach six months of age.

Doggy Daycare and Boarding Can Help with Puppy Training

If you feel guilty for leaving your dog home alone when you go on a business trip or vacation, drop them off at a dog boarding in San Rafael.

Doggy daycare facilities employ dog behaviorists who take care of your pups needs. A doggy daycare provides ample physical and mental stimulation to its guests. In a daycare facility, your pup will watch and learn from other dogs. It will acquire new skills and work on its existing skills. Your pooch will learn to differentiate between bad and acceptable behavior.
